U.S. Climate Action Reserve
CAR, Article 5 Project Protocol
  • Consulting and guidance during the individual CAR project process steps
  • Elaboration of Monitoring and Operation Plan (MOP) – plan of the monitoring, controlling, recording and reporting activities of ODS collection, transport and final destruction in order to fulfil all procedural requirements of the CAR.
  • Optimization of the monitoring operations, data recording and management

The client´s joint venture “Ecofrigo” is operating a de-manufacturing plant of the end-of-life refrigeration appliances in Celaya, state Guanajuato, Mexico. Thanks to an advanced European technology the de-manufacturing process has been supplemented by the refrigeration gasses extraction step. The refrigeration gases, especially those used in the old appliances, are so called “freons” (chlorfluorcarbons). They have a strong adverse effect on the Earth´s ozone layer and therefore are named as the ozone depleting substance (ODS). Moreover, they are very potent greenhouse gases, too. Global Warming Potential of ODS is 1,000-11,000 times higher than GWO of CO2. De-manufacturing in the Mexican plant includes the extraction of the refrigerants gases from the cooling system under negative pressure to avoid leaks, purification (removing the water and lubricants) and safe storage of these gases.Ecofrigo is collecting the ODS from several similar de-manufacturing plants in Mexico, too.O.S.L. overtakes the possession of the gases from Ecofrigo once collected in larger quantities (above 10 tons) and arranges for their safe transport to United States where the gases are destroyed in a certified incineration facility.Destruction of ODS sourced from Mexico which is an Article 5 country (according to the Montreal Protocol on ozone layer protection) is a project activity eligible for generation of carbon credits  under the American voluntary carbon trading scheme “Climate Action Reserve”(CAR). The project will destroy more than 10 tons of the refrigerant “R-12”– dichlorodifluoromethane which has the GWP 10,900 tCO2e/tonne of R-12. Thus the emission reductions of ca 113,000 tons of CO2 equivalents will be achieved and the CAR emission reduction units – the CRTs will be awarded to the project.
